Overview

The original Springshed programme with the Department of Rural Development, Government of West Bengal ran April 2017 to March 2020, rejuvenating 291 springs across 12 blocks in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Kalimpong districts, implemented through Rajarhat Prasari.

Jharnadhara Springshed Management now covers 616 springs across the same 4 districts, restoring hydrological flows for hill and tea-garden communities through community-led spring-shed mapping, recharge structures and Dhara Sevak (spring-keeper) institutions, with digital tools now supplementing field capacity building under the EDIT initiative.

Key Strategies

Map springsheds and recharge zones using hydrogeological assessment
Build recharge structures and protect spring catchments
Train Dhara Sevaks (community spring-keepers) for ongoing maintenance
Pilot digital, mentoring-led capacity building for front-line workers
